When did you first realise that Christmas was around the corner? Was it during last week’s mid-X Factor premiere of the John Lewis ad? Or when, standing in the aisle of your local supermarket, you scratched your head wondering why the loo roll had been replaced with crackers, Bendicks’ mints and miniature bottles of whiskey? Incidentally, when will they realise most of us prefer full-size ones? #justsaying.
Anyway, it may not even have dawned on you yet that Santa Claus is coming to town. But don’t worry – over the next few weeks, I’ll help you out with your shopping with posts on gifts to please one and all, starting today with my top 10 ten presents for coffee addicts.
1. Delonghi Scultura espresso machine, £200, John Lewis
Why it will make their Christmas Let them tamp grounds into the portafilter and texture milk like a pro with this stunning hands-on machine. OK, so you don’t know what that means, but if they love coffee, they will.
2. Monaco cafetière, £21.95, La Cafetière
Why it will make their Christmas If you’re bored of all the plain old cafetières out there, this Pistachio green version is a sight for sore (or should that be bleary?) eyes. Snap it up quick as it’s available for a limited time only, along with an equally pretty Retro Blue version.
3. Lavazza A Modo Mio Favola cappuccino coffee machine from AEG, £129.99, Currys
Why it will make their Christmas Programme in how much coffee you want in you cup, and this festive red machine will remember every time, so you won’t have to stop the flow manually. Oh, and comes with a milk-frothing sidekick so you can make a cappuccino at the touch of a single button. Prefer an iced coffee? It can make cold drinks, too.
4. Milk frother, £18.50, Judge Cookware
Why it will make their Christmas Because everyone knows that hot milk has magical powers. It will turn a humble espresso into a magical cappuccino, and makes for the most delicious and slumber-inducing bedtime drinks. This cute pot keeps things old school – pop it on you hob and heat gently while pumping the plunger for froth like a bubble bath beard.
5. NC-ZA1 bean-to-cup espresso maker, £899, Panasonic
Why it will make their Christmas Serious bean-to-cup machines traditionally like to hog space on the worktop, but this model brings a whole new meaning to ‘skinny latte’. It grinds just the right amount of beans only as they are needed, so you get the fullest flavour every time, and you can store up to four different recipes, tailoring the coffee strength, and amounts of water, milk and frothed milk exactly to your liking.
6. Sage smart kettle, £99.99, Lakeland
Why it will make their Christmas There’s nothing worse than that bitter taste of burnt coffee, but chucking just-boiled water into a cafetière may lead to exactly that. What they need is a kettle that can heat the water to the perfect temperature for coffee grounds – that’s 95°C – like this one. It will keep tea lovers happy, too as it has four more presets: 80°C for green tea, 85°C for white tea, 90°C for oolong and 100°C for black tea.
7. Travel press coffee maker, £18, Bodum
Why it will make their Christmas If you’re in a hurry, you order your coffee to go. But if you’re in a real hurry, you brew it on the go with this French press-cum-cup. Just give it four minutes to steep, then plunge away.
8. Accents Red filter coffee maker, £49.99, Morphy Richards
Why it will make their Christmas They might be bouncing off the walls afterwards, but they can fill up on coffee for hours with a filter coffee machine like this one. It can make up to 12 cups of coffee in 10 minutes, and has a programmable timer so you can set it to have your caffeine fix ready and waiting of a morning. What a lifesaver!
9. GVX231 coffee grinder, £40, Krups
Why it will make their Christmas I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – grinding your beans as and when you need them guarantees the fullest, freshest flavour, so if you haven’t got the cash to splash on a bean-to-cup maker, get them one of these. It will grind beans for between two and 10 cups of coffee to minimise wastage and there are 17 coarseness settings, so you can go from very fine for espresso machines to nice and chunky for cafetières.
10. Nespresso U by Magimix, £129.99, House of Fraser
Why it will make their Christmas I hope Boy About Tech is reading this, because this is the machine I’d want to find in my stocking this year. Even the fussiest palette will find a flavour to savour among Nespresso’s unrivalled 16 coffee varieties. Want that caffeine fix fast? The U heats up and is ready to go in 25 seconds, pumps out coffee at a high 19 bar pressure, and saves energy by turning itself off after nine minutes of no one using it.
